#WhatDrivesYou: Claire Taylor
February 18, 2015
In advance of Toronto's favourite Contemporary Art Fair, Artist Project - which kicks-off tomorrow with an Opening Night Party - we are excited to introduce you to Show Director, Claire Taylor! Artist Project is celebrating its eighth installment this year at the Better Living Centre, Exhibition Place, from February 19th-22nd. The exciting three day art fair offers guests the unique opportunity to meet and buy art directly from over 250 emerging and mid-career artists. The show expects more than 15,000 seasoned art collectors, first-time art buyers, gallery dealers and interior designers in attendance!
This year you don't want to miss renowned artist and sculptor Bruno Billio’s unveiling of a 100 foot long art work, dubbed Rocco, where he uses common, ordinary objects as his medium, and stacks and manipulates them into a spatial installation using coloured string.
We caught up with Claire to discuss the show, her involvement, and tips for guests and artists alike!
When did you begin your work with the Artist Project and what inspired you to get involved?
I have been working with Artist Project for five years in the role of Director. I studied Art History at McGill, completed my Masters at the University College London, and always knew that I wanted to work in the art world. When I moved to Toronto, I was fortunate to work as Associate Director of a gallery that was committed to exhibiting at international art fairs. I still remember my first Art Basel Miami, and that was when I really experienced the energy, creativity and dynamism of art fairs! The role of the art fair has gained significant cultural relevance in terms of how we engage with art and artists, and I wanted to be part of that dialogue.
What do you love most about what you do?
I love that Artist Project connects collectors and buyers of all experiences with independent and emerging artists directly; I particularly love knowing that I play a pivotal role in promoting, developing and celebrating artistic talent! I have built relationships with so many of these artists and their strength and passion for what they do inspires me.
Any tips for new comers to the industry?
See as much art as you can, and travel to see it! Thankfully we have online platforms that give us more access than ever to art, but nothing competes with seeing the works in person. Visit galleries, artist studios, art fairs and connect with the people in these places. Also, handwritten thank you notes!
What is your definition of success?
Setting goals and never losing sight of them, and making new goals too.
Ultimately, being successful and yet still being a kind, grateful and polite person!
Motto to live by:
Live the life you've imagined!
What is next for Claire Taylor?
Every year the Artist Project develops in fresh, exciting and unexpected ways! I want to continue contributing to the brand in meaningful and thoughtful ways. In addition to my role at Artist Project, I will be working on the VIP Programming for Art Toronto.
