What Drives You: Joanie Pietracupa, Editor-in-Chief of LOULOU Magazine
August 27, 2013
Joanie Pietracupa is the acting Editor-in-Chief at LOULOU Magazine, replacing Julia Cyboran while she’s on her maternity leave. Managing LOULOU Magazine’s ideas and content in both French and English is something she’s enjoyed doing for the past year as Associate Editor-in-Chief, but managing a big team of individuals is something brand new to her. Joanie finds her new role both challenging and rewarding. Get to know more about her right here on The FDrive!
“Seriously, my job isn’t a job, it’s an obsession. How lucky am I?” gushes Joanie about her current position. We asked her…#WhatDrivesYou
1. Biggest career highlight?
This job I’m doing right now. It’s full of lessons, challenges and hard work, but I’ve never been happier at the office. I’ve always been lucky enough to be at the right place at the right time to take on bigger and better roles…but then again, my mom would most likely tell you it’s not all luck!
2. Biggest lesson learned?
If you want to work in the publishing business, you’ve got to learn how to be a good team player. There’s no “I” in “Team”, just as there’s no great magazine without a full masthead. It really is a collective effort, and the sooner you understand that you need to help, guide and collaborate with your colleagues, the sooner you will shine as a person.
3. What do you love most about what you do?
I’m a very creative person, so I love working on what we’ll feature in new issues, but I also need to be challenged and stimulated on a daily basis. I have the immensely satisfying opportunity to work with amazingly inspiring writers, editors, directors, photographers, publishers and designers, and that is worth all the gold in the world.
4. What do you do in your downtime?
Go to concerts, the spa, the gym, walk on Mont Royal, get drinks with friends, try out new restaurants, cook at home and binge-watch my favourite TV series.
5. I can’t live without my…
Eyebrow pencil, Yves Saint Laurent handbag, my cat, family and friends. In that order, obviously!
6. Favourite design/fashion trend at the moment?
Open side boots and black leather moto jackets. I’m really into that whole badass/rock/grunge trend we’ll be seeing everywhere this fall. Thanks, Saint Laurent Paris!
7. Top 5 songs for the soundtrack to your life…or, like, right now.
Wow, this is so hard! I could give you a big playlist, but selecting only five songs seems like torture. Nevertheless…My top five songs of the moment, new or not:
1. Black Skinhead by Kanye West
The perfect workout song!
2. Sleepyhead by Passion Pit
It just puts me in an incredibly good mood.
3. Carmensita by Devendra Banhart
I love Devendra, his unique style and his music.
4. Breezeblocks by alt-J
Because it makes me think of someone very dear to my heart every time I hear it.
5. Instant Crush by Daft Punk feat. Julian Casablancas
I love Daft Punk, I adore Julian… What’s more to say?).
