MODEL MONDAY: Haruko
October 17, 2016
Meet Haruko. She is definitely not your average 18 year old. This teenager is taking the modelling industry by storm. After only two years of modeling with Spot 6, she is moving to Hong Kong to build up her portfolio and pursue her dream of one day becoming a Victoria Secret angel like one of her biggest role models, Kendall Jenner.
Tell us about yourself – what makes you, you?
I’m 18 years old and I’ve been modeling for two years. What makes me, me are the experiences I’ve had in life combined with the influence of my mother, role models, and my agents. These experiences have helped to mature me. I was very shy when I started modeling and I wasn’t comfortable in my skin. Thanks to my experiences I am now confidant and comfortable talking to strangers.
How did you get started?
When I was younger modeling agencies always approached me. It was something I had always wanted to do so but never pursued until Cynthia from Spot 6 commented on one of my Instagram images. I met with her and loved her. She was different from other agencies and genuinely cared about my overall wellbeing.
What drives you out of bed in the morning?
I sleep in all the time. Only thing that gets me out of bed is modeling. I love doing it.
What do you love about your career?
I love that every shoot or set that I’ve been has been filled with so much creativity. I’ll go to one shoot and it will be edgy, and another will be girly and fun. I love how everyday is different.
What advice do you have to those aspiring to be successful in the modeling industry?
The best advice I have is to always be polite and nice because there are a lot of repeating clients, and you never know what the future may hold. Be mindful of people’s feelings and always network with people on set. Talk to them, get to know them better, and make connections because they may open doors for you later on.
How do you stay fit?
I just started going to a trainer. At school I played lacrosse, soccer, and swimming. Now I go to the gym 2-3 days each week. My training includes light weights to tone up, walking on the treadmill, squats, and weighted ball exercises for arms.
What is your favourite cheat snack/meal?
I have a sweet tooth so my cheat snack would be a warm chocolate brownie with melting ice cream.
Who is your role model and why?
Rihanna because she doesn’t care about what anyone says, she does her own thing and always stays true to herself.
Kendall Jenner because most people doubted her, but she pushed through it and persevered. My mother because she is such strong person. I am a feminist and an optimist because of her.
What is your most memorable photoshoot that you have been featured in?
My most memorable photoshoot was a lingerie shoot with Anthony James. My dream is to model for Victoria Secret so I felt like the shoot was my first steps towards that goal. I also like working for Soho Metropolitan Hotels, the energy is always upbeat and fun on set and the crew always goes out of their way to make me comfortable.
When you’re not modeling or working where can we find you?
Probably with friends, recently I’ve been hanging out with them as much as I can because I am going away for three months to Hong Kong.
Invent one thing to make your life easier?
I would invent a teleportation device to go from one place to another.
Lighting and tilting your face. I find it always makes you look cuter.
