Driven: Bahar Niramwalla
February 21, 2012
This week’s DRIVEN gal threw away her laptop and briefcase for makeup brushes and lipgloss. Now, Bahar Niramwalla, is the go-to for all things beauty, fashion and travel. Bahar’s beauty experience is far reaching and includes Beauty Basics Makeup artist and presenter with the Globe and Mail's Globe Life section, weekly Beauty Q&A expert for the Globe's Saturday Style section, special appearances as the Beauty Specialist on the Marilyn Denis Show and her very own blog http://blogbahar.com.
We caught up with this beauty babe to find out what makes her tick.
Beauty Expert or Beauty Junkie?
The latter ended up becoming the former. Years of feeling an odd gravitational pull to buying every cosmetic on sale left me with boxes of makeup and dozens of hair tools. I’ve questioned a great deal of my past purchases, only now, as I know a LOT more than I used to about what it is I put on my face/hair/body. Figuring out why stuff does what it does and whether it’s good or bad for me is kind of fascinating. Yes, I am a little bit of a nerd.
If I wasn’t a makeup guru, what would I be?
Bored. I worked in radio promotions years ago and I was bored. Years of marketing and advertising left my pockets full but my mind vacant. Now I get to do makeup and write about it for a living. I also get the oppourtunity to write about travel and fashion. I’m a very lucky girl. I suppose I might be tempted to try out baking in my own shop, but I know I wouldn’t be able to commit to waking up that early.
Best advice you’ve received?
Just be honest or “keep it real” as the kids are sayin’. I think, as you get older, this becomes less of the kind of advice you receive and more of the kind you try to give to those around you.
I’m addicted to discovering new super foods that are supposed to keep my immune system healthy but they have to taste good. I’m not big on trying to choke down something that tastes awful just because it’s good for me. My current obsession is bee pollen infused in unpasteurized honey. I could eat that with yoghurt and granola everyday, for the rest of my life.
Favorite Vacation spot?
Being with the right person/people is what makes or breaks a vacation, but out of the places I have been, I’ve not been able to get the following out of my mind: the street vendors of Mumbai, the warm hospitality of Crete, the beautiful seaside town of Koper and the hidden side streets of Havana.
Travel, work, write, take over the world, travel some more.
